Alphanumeric CNPJ: What Foreign Groups Must Change from July 2026

The alphanumeric CNPJ is now live: Brazil’s Federal Revenue issued the first one on 31 July 2026, and new registrations may now carry letters as well as digits. Existing CNPJs do not change, but every new subsidiary, branch or foreign holding registered from now on may receive the new format. This guide covers what foreign groups must adjust on the corporate side (registrations, contracts, KYC, Central Bank records and powers) and in the systems that feed them.

In brief

Rule
IN RFB 2,229/2024
Live since
July 2026, issued gradually
Existing CNPJs
Unchanged, remain valid
Format
14 characters, same mask
  • Only new registrations receive the new format, including new branches of companies that already have a numeric CNPJ.
  • Both formats will coexist indefinitely, so systems and templates must accept letters and digits.
  • The check digits stay numeric and use the same modulo 11 routine, with letters converted to numbers.
  • The Federal Revenue charges nothing for the change and will not contact taxpayers asking for updates.

What the alphanumeric CNPJ changes, and when

The CNPJ is the national register of legal entities kept by the Federal Revenue (Receita Federal). Every Brazilian company, each of its establishments and every foreign entity that holds assets or quotas in Brazil has one. Because the stock of numeric combinations was running low, Normative Instruction RFB 2,229/2024 amended the CNPJ rules (IN RFB 2,119/2022) to allow letters in the identifier.

The Federal Revenue set July 2026 as the start of production. On 31 July 2026 it generated the first alphanumeric CNPJ, 00.000.000/E08G-12, for a branch of a large Brazilian bank. Notice that the root (the first eight characters) is still numeric; only the branch order contains letters.

The rollout is gradual. According to the Federal Revenue’s Q&A, the new numbers are being issued progressively, and numeric numbers may still be assigned while numeric capacity lasts. Therefore, a new entity registered today may receive either format, and your processes must handle both.

How the new format works

The structure keeps 14 positions and the familiar mask XX.XXX.XXX/XXXX-XX. The first eight positions form the root, which identifies the entity. The next four form the order, which identifies the establishment (0001 is usually the head office at registration). The last two are check digits.

ElementNumeric CNPJAlphanumeric CNPJ
Length14 digits14 characters
Root (positions 1 to 8)Digits 0 to 9Digits or uppercase letters A to Z
Order (positions 9 to 12)Digits 0 to 9Digits or uppercase letters A to Z
Check digits (13 and 14)Numeric, modulo 11Numeric, modulo 11 with letters converted
Meaning of charactersNoneNone; letters are random and carry no location or legal form
Mixed casesNot applicableNumeric root with alphanumeric order, or the reverse

To calculate the check digits, each character is converted to its ASCII code minus 48. Digits keep their face value, and letters A to Z become 17 to 42. Then the usual weights and modulo 11 routine apply.

Which group entities receive an alphanumeric CNPJ

For a foreign group, the question is practical: which entities in your Brazilian structure, and among your Brazilian counterparties, may show up with letters?

SituationFormatWhat to do
Existing subsidiary and its existing branchesStays numericNothing on the number itself
New branch of an existing subsidiaryMay be alphanumeric, as in the first case issuedCheck ERP, invoicing and bank set-up before opening
New subsidiary or SPEMay be alphanumericPrepare templates and KYC forms that accept letters
Foreign parent or new foreign holding registering a CNPJNew registration, so the same rule appliesCheck that SCE-IED, bank and contract fields accept it
Individual microentrepreneurs (MEI)Existing ones stay numeric; future ones may changeRelevant for supplier onboarding
New Brazilian suppliers and customersMay be alphanumericVendor master data and tax validations must accept it

The foreign parent case deserves attention. A foreign company needs its own CNPJ before it can hold quotas, as explained in our guide on CNPJ for foreign companies. A holding created in a reorganization, or a new investor in a joint venture, may therefore enter Brazilian records with an alphanumeric number.

Corporate records, contracts and KYC

Most coverage of the alphanumeric CNPJ focuses on software. However, the corporate side is where errors cost time, because a rejected filing or a blocked transfer must be redone with documents from abroad.

Board of Trade filings and articles

The Board of Trade (Junta Comercial) uses its own registration number, the NIRE, which is not affected. Articles of association, amendments and minutes, however, quote the CNPJ of the company and of corporate partners. When a new foreign holding or a new branch has an alphanumeric number, transcribe it exactly, in uppercase, with the standard mask. A single wrong character is a classic cause of a requirement (exigência) from the Junta.

Central Bank records

Foreign direct investment is registered in SCE-IED and foreign loans in SCE-Crédito, both identifying Brazilian investees by CNPJ. The Federal Revenue states that government systems must follow the same rules. Even so, when a new entity with an alphanumeric number enters your structure, confirm that its registration and the FX contracts that carry the SCE code show it correctly. Our SCE-IED guide explains the reporting cycle.

Banks, KYC and beneficial owners

Banks collect the CNPJ of the account holder, its corporate partners and, through ownership charts, the chain up to beneficial owners. The same applies to the e-BEF beneficial-owner filing. Make sure that the KYC packs your treasury team sends contain the exact number, and that internal databases do not truncate or reformat it. See our guide on opening a bank account in Brazil.

Contracts, powers of attorney and certificates

  • Templates: update contract, purchase order and power of attorney templates whose fields or validation rules assume 14 digits.
  • Powers of attorney: a power granted by or to a new entity must quote its CNPJ exactly; registries compare it character by character.
  • Digital certificates: the company’s e-CNPJ certificate carries the CNPJ; confirm that your signing tools and portals read alphanumeric numbers. See our guide on the e-CNPJ digital certificate.
  • Clearance certificates: procurement and audit teams that pull certificates for counterparties need tools that accept the new format.

Systems, invoices and payments

According to the Federal Revenue, all public and private systems that read the CNPJ must be adjusted. It lists the main impacts as electronic tax documents, tax returns and internal accounting and tax systems. In practice, check these areas:

  • Electronic invoices: a joint technical note (Nota Técnica Conjunta 2025.001) adapted electronic tax documents such as the NF-e and NFC-e, whose access keys and barcodes contain the CNPJ. Our guide on electronic invoicing in Brazil covers the wider system.
  • ERP and master data: fields typed as numbers, validation masks with digits only and routines that strip non-numeric characters will break.
  • Tax payment slips: the manual federal payment slip (DARF) accepts an alphanumeric CNPJ in its taxpayer field.
  • PIX: existing PIX keys keep working, and companies with an alphanumeric CNPJ may use it as a key.
  • Group reporting: consolidation, transfer pricing and tax engines that use the CNPJ as a key or join field need testing.

The tax reform adds pressure, because the new CBS and IBS documents and validations also rely on the CNPJ. Our guide on the Brazilian tax reform explains that timeline.

Alphanumeric CNPJ readiness plan

  1. Map where the CNPJ lives

List every system, template and register that stores or validates a CNPJ, in Brazil and at headquarters, including vendor master data and treasury tools.

  2. Fix data types and validations

Store the CNPJ as text, accept A to Z in the first 12 positions and apply the updated check-digit routine.

  3. Test with simulated numbers

Use the National CNPJ Simulator to generate test numbers and run invoices, payments and reports end to end.

  4. Update corporate templates

Revise contract, minute, power of attorney and KYC templates so that they do not assume digits only.

  5. Plan new registrations

Before opening a branch or a new entity, confirm with banks, ERP owners and the local accountant that the new number will flow through.

  6. Brief counterparties

Tell procurement and accounts receivable that suppliers and customers may present letters, and that this is genuine.

Checklist for group legal and finance teams

  • CNPJ fields stored as text, never as integers.
  • Leading zeros preserved in imports and spreadsheets.
  • Letters accepted only in uppercase, in positions 1 to 12.
  • Check digits validated with the official routine.
  • Contract, minute and power of attorney templates reviewed.
  • Bank KYC packs and signatory forms tested with a sample number.
  • SCE-IED and SCE-Crédito records checked when a new entity joins.
  • Electronic invoice issuance and receipt tested with test numbers.
  • Supplier onboarding and certificate searches updated.
  • Staff warned about fake “CNPJ update” emails.

Common mistakes

  • Stripping everything that is not a digit. Many routines clean the mask by removing non-numeric characters, which destroys an alphanumeric number.
  • Converting to a number. Spreadsheets and databases that treat the CNPJ as a number drop leading zeros and reject letters.
  • Assuming letters mean something. Letters are random and say nothing about state, sector or legal form.
  • Waiting for your own new entity. Your first alphanumeric CNPJ may come from a supplier, not from your group.
  • Falling for scams. The Federal Revenue has warned that it does not send emails asking for CNPJ updates or payments related to the new format.

Questions investors ask

When did the alphanumeric CNPJ start?

The Federal Revenue scheduled production for July 2026 under IN RFB 2,229/2024 and generated the first alphanumeric CNPJ on 31 July 2026. New numbers are being issued gradually, and numeric numbers may still be assigned for some time.

Will my company’s existing CNPJ change?

No. Existing CNPJs remain exactly the same and valid, and no action is needed with public bodies. Only new registrations, including new branches of existing companies, may receive the new format.

Will a new branch of my subsidiary get letters in its CNPJ?

It may. The root stays the same as the head office, but the branch order can contain letters, as in the first number issued. Prepare systems and bank forms before opening the branch.

How is the alphanumeric CNPJ check digit calculated?

The two check digits remain numeric and use modulo 11. Each character is converted to its ASCII code minus 48, so digits keep their value and letters A to Z become 17 to 42, before the usual weights apply. Official validation code is available.

Does a foreign parent company get an alphanumeric CNPJ?

A foreign entity that registers a new CNPJ follows the same rule as any new registration, so it may receive the new format. Foreign parents with an existing CNPJ keep their current number.

Is there a fee to get or update to the alphanumeric CNPJ?

No. The Federal Revenue charges no fee for new registrations or for existing numbers, and the procedure is unchanged. The only costs are internal system adjustments.
