What is a CNPJ?
The CNPJ is the national company registration number issued by the Brazilian Federal Revenue. Every Brazilian company and branch has one, and foreign companies that hold shares in Brazil need their own CNPJ too.
What does an "inapto" CNPJ mean?
It means the Federal Revenue considers the company irregular, usually because it failed to file mandatory returns or was not found at its address. The company typically faces problems with banks, clearance certificates and invoicing until it is regularized.
Does this lookup include clearance certificates?
No. Federal, labour, FGTS and Junta Comercial certificates come from separate systems. LegalBR can obtain and review them as part of a full check.
Does it work with the new alphanumeric CNPJ?
Yes. Validation accepts the new alphanumeric format, as long as the number is already in the Federal Revenue public database.
Public Federal Revenue data (CNPJ open data), obtained through a public lookup service, which may not reflect changes from recent weeks. Alerts are for information only, reviewed by LegalBR on 30 October 2026, and do not replace a due diligence. We do not store the CNPJs you look up.
Found an alert? We fix it.
LegalBR regularizes CNPJs, updates shareholders and powers of attorney, files corporate acts at the Junta Comercial and obtains certificates for foreign-owned companies in Brazil.
